This week, I discovered a conspiracy documentary that amounted to something like, “Join us as we unlock the mysteries of something that every human was well aware of until the time of the Enlightenment…at which point humanity purged all mystery and mysticism from our collective memory so that clandestine government agencies could spend millions of dollars to rediscover them during the Cold War Era.”
To be more specific, the piece was “uncovering” “hidden” truths about the once classified government operation entitled, “Stargate.” The most ironic part of the whole experience was that earlier that day I had just performed something quite similar to the ability at the center of the documentary’s dramatic reveal. What they labeled as “paranormal” many millions of people around the world simply refer to as prayer.
I hope that wasn’t a spoiler.
The cutest part of the whole thing was the fact that all the “top-secret government-trained operatives” seemed completely oblivious to the fact that their local priest probably already had these skills and probably still does. They were just so tickled pink by the fact that all this mind-blowing stuff was actually real! So cute!
I took a video course in a church small group over twenty years ago that amounted to basically the same thing. What the government came to label as “remote viewing” most people I know call “listening prayer.”
I hope that wasn’t a spoiler. (If you are clairvoyant, it obviously wasn’t.)
I suppose that’s not exactly fair, or entirely precise anyway. Remote viewing is sometimes called far-sight. To be a bit more specific, it it the ability to know something about a place or person or event that is not immediately adjacent or accessible or discoverable via our traditional five senses. It involves knowing or “seeing” something in your mind’s eye.
What I found most fascinating about the documentary was that an individual completely removed from church history along with any and all spiritual experiences is now able to stumble into such an ability devoid of all past historical understandings of said ability and declare their amazement at this new found discovery! Not once did the creators of the film speculate about the Apocalypse of John. Or the special knowledge demonstrated on multiple occasions by the Apostle Paul, or any of the visions of the Old Testament prophets.
Anywho, the thing that continually blew these people’s minds as they unveiled operation Stargate boiled down to the ability to still your spirit before the presence of the creative force of the universe and listen…and actually hear something. Of course they didn’t talk about it like that. And they were listening for stuff like USSR fissile materials, the location of fugitives, and insider Wall Street information. Potato, potato. (Hmmm, I guess that saying doesn’t really work when typed out.)
In my experience, this exercise tends to be more about listening for someone’s inner healing or spiritual direction. Sometimes it bridges into pivotal life decisions and the like. But I suppose it doesn’t really matter what one is listening for. The bottom line is the universe speaks to anyone willing to listen. On the surface, we experience the second law of thermodynamics. Entropy. Disorder. Chaos. This is undeniable. Beneath the surface, we find something totally opposite: a creative will, order, and peace sometimes expressed in this human sentiment, “Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.”
On the surface, chaos rules. Think of this as the wind, storms, and ocean waves. Beneath the surface, we find a relentless, unyielding, and inevitable order—currents returning everything to its proper place. Individuals and institutions bent on power have no clue as to how to use this power, or what it even is. But it is there for their using, none the less. Individuals and institutions dedicated to humility and self-sacrifice have relied on this power for centuries to push back the destructive forces of chaos that will continue to plague our human existence until the next turn of time.
Anyone who has ever maintained a garden knows good and well the toil involved in this cosmic epic. Order and creation takes constant effort and maintenance in the world’s current condition. Chaos and disorder are constantly pushing in from every side. I personally believe a time is coming when this will no longer be the case. And I’m endeavoring toward that end.
Little did I know the government considers me a “rogue paranormal operative.” Meh, I suppose when they tire of me, I’ll see them coming.

This week, I’ve taken a break from actively working on my “Catching Jars” manuscript. But of course I’ve not taken a break from thinking. As I sharpen my thoughts about the subject matter of this book, I know I’m improving the narrative down the road. It’s been nice to have a few extended moments to simply sit and “lose myself” in thought and prayer. I know, I know. Prayer is such a loaded word for some. We all have ideas of what it is and what it isn’t and/or what it is supposed to be. That’s part of the fun for me. Obviously no one alive understands everything there is to understand about a topic such as prayer. Many with strong opinions about it don’t even practice it. Many who practice it don’t even realize they’re practicing it. But I guess that all depends on your definition. I just can’t fight the feeling that most of life lies outside the realm of our traditional five senses. And I don’t really care to fight it.
