Do you believe in things you can’t see (or have never seen)? And if so, which ones. Because publicly believing in something like Democracy will gather a different kind of attention than believing in…say, leprechauns or Popes in puffer jackets.
What I’ve discovered is that we all have different limits for the unseen or unexperienced. To once again quote the wise words of Homer Simpson, “Lisa, Vampires are make-believe. Just like elves, gremlins and Eskimos.” I happen to know that one of those four things is very much real. My high school buddy used to drive a Gremlin.
But it’s tough to believe in stuff we’ve never experienced first hand. One of the things I constantly told my kids when they were little was that just because I’ve never seen something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The question would go something like, “Dad, are unicorns real?” I would shrug my shoulders and respond, “I’ve never seen one, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.” Same for Santa Clause and quality American-made electronics. One thing I worried about was them discovering Santa was a hoax and then deciding Jesus probably was too because hey, if all the adults lied about one thing…
But even with adults, I find there are all kinds of intangible things that most of us are willing to go along with while there are others we will decide to resist. Maybe it has something to do with how each of us was raised. You might be disposed toward the idea of zombies (you know scientific ones), while quite opposed to ghosts. Or you may be reticent to buy into God but quite eager to embrace aliens, or vice versa.
Angels and demons, miracles or magic? Stairs to nowhere, crop circles, Stone Henge (Sometimes we have tangible things left over that make no sense or hint at a source unseen.) The Bermuda Triangle, the lost city of Atlantis, Cleveland. Are these places real? And if so, how did they come to be?
Personally, I believe plenty of stuff exists out there that I’ve never seen, and perhaps don’t have the ability to see. Maybe I’ll see a few more things before my days on terra firma expire. But I tend to be more of a Mulder than a Scully. I want to believe. Not because I have some deep-seated need to. It’s simply more fun. The existence of alien life is more fun than its nonexistence (at least until it blows up my planet or probes me). Who really wants to exist in a universe with no God? One were just the stuff you see is the stuff you get. Boring.
Sign me up for the supernatural and the supranatural. Every now and then, when no one is watching I test out my telekinetic abilities to see if they’re coming along. Nothing yet. But just because I’ve never seen anyone move objects via thought doesn’t mean it ain’t real.
