You’ve heard the expression, “Too much of a good thing.” We’ve all wrestled with it at times. I had a confrontation last night.
Let me tell you, the chips and salsa from the restaurant Chili’s is unequivocally the best in existence. Because of this fact, I find it quite impossible to eat any less of them than the amount available to me. Because of this fact, the marketing concept of “bottomless” becomes quite dangerous to my health.
I’m sure you can see where this is going. Too much of a good thing. As a result I spent much of the night with my legs cramping. As a result of that, I slightly regret my decision to eat all the chips and salsa I could find. I probably won’t do that again for at least a couple weeks. (Unless someone brings me another order of Chili’s chips and salsa.)
But what if the matter we struggle with more starkly can be better stated as, “Too much of a bad thing?” What then? We can all openly acknowledge that chips and salsa is a good thing. A beautiful thing. A wonderful thing.
But then there are things that most of humanity throughout our moral history of ups and downs have accepted as bad. In one form or another, most people have summarized them as: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth. Or you can opt for Master Yoda’s version: "Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." It’s often been said the original sin is pride.
So what happens when a society begins to hold these bad things in high regard? What happens when we raise them up and present them as desirable? And we dive headlong into too much of a bad thing? When our celebrities and leaders embody things like pride, wrath, and greed?
On the bright side, maybe it’s good that we are being more honest with ourselves these days. Not that long ago, we would have held secret longings for these bad things while denying them publicly. Then we moved through a season of public scandals behind every bush. Coverups eventually become so commonplace that I suppose it was inevitable we would land where we are now: embracing too much of a bad thing.
